The Fight in the Fine Print

During a recent 40 Days for Life kick off rally, Ryan Kennedy, the Chief of Operations for Florida Citizens Alliance, took up the microphone to inform gathered Florida life advocates of two legislative initiatives in need of support.

The first initiative, Fetal Developmental Education Bill (House Bill 1071), would mandate the comprehensive education of human embryological and fetal development from the moment of fertilization in charter and public schools for students in grades 6 through 12.

Planned Parenthood has called this bill “indoctrination.”

Advocates for the protection of life are encouraged to contact State Senator Kathleen Passidomo to urge her to vote for HB 1071.

The second initiative, a civil liability for the wrongful death of an unborn child (House Bill 289), would allow parents of unborn children to pursue legal action for mental pain and suffering caused by the wrongful death of their unborn child due to negligence or wrongful acts.

Planned Parenthood has described this bill as “a slippery slope that could lead to fertilized eggs and embryos having the same rights as a living person.”

While each legislative initiative is representative of a distinct aspect of the ongoing abortion debate, both reflect a broader strategy unfolding in Florida’s legislature with the intent to defend and protect life. The education initiative would help shape the cultural understanding of human life and development during its earliest stages. The civil liability initiative would cement legal recognition of unborn life in an arena separate from abortion restriction that redefines how the law and public recognize personhood.

Advocates for life are encouraged to contact Senate President Ben Albritton and urge him to allow the passage of HB 289.
